Start with area and roofing squares

Roof area is normally calculated in square feet, then expressed in roofing squares, where one square represents 100 square feet. The quality of the result depends on the dimensions and roof sections entered.

If the starting measurement is footprint area, the calculator needs a pitch multiplier before estimating roof-surface area. Complex geometry still requires measured sections and professional judgment.

Keep pitch and waste assumptions visible

Pitch changes the surface-area multiplier. Waste accounts for cuts, laps, valleys, hips, dormers, layout, and material handling. Neither should be hidden behind a single unexplained total.

Use a stated waste assumption and adjust it for the roof design and material. A planning range is more honest than false precision.

Bundle counts depend on the selected shingle product and its stated coverage. Many planning examples use bundles per square, but the actual packaging and manufacturer instructions control the purchase quantity.

Round purchase quantities in the direction required by the material and job plan, and keep the unrounded calculation available for review.
